How to Measure Yourself For a Suit

It's easy to measure yourself for a suit. It is best not to try and do all the measurements yourself though as you will find it too difficult. Most of the measurements require you to be standing straight. Fiddling around with a tape measure at the same time simply won't work. Ask a friend to help you measure yourself for a suit. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

You should use a fully flexible tape measure made of plastic or cloth, and not the metal retractable type you may have in your toolbox. Never try to measure yourself for a suit using a rigid one-foot plastic rule of the type children use at school. It won't work. This article tells you how to measure yourself for a suit in five easy stages.

1. Start by measuring yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. Don't wear shoes. Stand naturally, not tensed up or slouched either. You will need a friend to help with this measurement. It's probably best to record all the measurements in both inches and centimetres. Most tape measures are able to do this.

2. Working down from the top, measure your chest next. This should be the widest measurement just below the armpits. Don't have the tape measure held too tight or too slack. Raise your arms to allow the person helping you to place the tape around your upper torso, then lower your arms again and stand naturally. When correctly tensioned, it should be possible to comfortably place two fingers between the tape and your body.

3. Measure your waist next. This should be the widest measurement at the waist. Stand naturally and don't hold your stomach in. The tape should be held firmly, but not too tightly either. Again, it should be easily possible to place two fingers between the tape and your body.

4. Measure the seat or hips next. This should be over the widest part of the buttocks. The tape should be held around the body, tight enough to measure accurately, but not so tight that two fingers can't be comfortably placed between the tape and the body.

5. This is the measurement that most men dread when handled by a stranger: the inside leg, or inseam, measurement. It needn't be a problem when done properly. You should wear a pair of good fitting trousers. Stand naturally with your legs slightly apart. Hold the end of the tape yourself into the crotch at the point where all the seams come together. Your friend should measure to the bottom of the leg where the trouser leg should end.

These measurements are usually all you will need. You can measure yourself for a suit more thoroughly if you wish and include measurement of the front leg, back leg, jacket length, arm length, scye depth and arm scye, for example. However, the simplest way to measure yourself for a suit is contained in the five easy steps above.
