How to Get the Water Moving in Your Bird Bath

It's summertime and those of us that have bird baths in our yards that are "Still", meaning you do not have a fountain bird bath, need to protect ourselves against those pesky and sometimes dangerous mosquitoes. The mosquito just loves any standing water where they lay their eggs. We know we are supposed to make sure we do not have any standing water around, we are warned about it all of the time. But do we realize that one of our favorite garden accessories can be a magnet for these buzzing, biting nuisances?

There are several inexpensive ways to eliminate the problem of standing water in the birdbath.

Bathing Accessories

Water Wiggler
The water wiggler is a great addition to any birdbath. They are small and require no plumbing. It only requires two batteries that should last the entire summer. The device sits in the middle of the birdbath and vibrates silently 24 hours a day. The vibration is just enough to "wiggle" the water creating constant movement. The movement not only deters mosquitoes, but it also will attract the birds.

Water Dripper
These are the original water movers. They are easily added to any birdbath and come in many different styles to match any landscape. They look like a cane shaped tube that drips minimal water continuously. The subtle "drip, drip" of a dripper is a visual magnet to any bird. When they see the ripples across the surface of your birdbath, they are drawn to it and stay a while! Each one usually comes with a custom dripper valve that regulates the flow of water from your outdoor faucet or a re-circulating pump. Just one drip per second, one pint of water per hour, turns your bird bath into an attractive gathering place for your feathered friends and will deter the mosquitoes.

Solar Fountain Pump
You can turn your birdbath into a fountain birdbath by installing a solar fountain pump. This device runs off of the suns energy, so you must place your birdbath in direct sunlight. These usually come with a filtering system that will also keep your birdbath clean. The lively fountain will delight the birds, and will create a relaxing atmosphere in your yard or garden. The objective is to get the water moving which will attract the birds, and keep our families safe from the threat of the West Nile virus and any other diseases these pesky bugs may carry.
