Bathing On A Budget? Try These Inexpensive, Durable Bathtubs

Are you looking for a new bathtub or shower? There are many options available beyond the old standard. Some of them are traditional, some designed to give a bathroom more of an individual appeal. The price range, practicality, and weights of various types of tub and shower also vary. Be sure to look at all your options when remodeling the bathroom.

In all cases, you should make sure that there is enough room for your prospective bath, that the floor will support is weight, and that there is enough water pressure to serve it properly. Also pay attention to how much water will evacuate the bathroom through drainage. A high volume shower head can put a lot of water into the tub, and it is important for the drain to accommodate this. Also be sure that your ventilation system can handle the humidity if you are thinking of installing a new shower or bath with more water volume than the old one.

Practical Bathtub Choices

Since WWI, alcove type bathtubs have been one of the most popular styles. They are enclosed on three sides by walls and on the fourth by a shower curtain or door. These are inexpensive, standardized, and generally can be installed with a minimum of effort. They are also great for installing grab bars and rails into, for those who need assistance in the tub. The alcove bathtub combines very effectively with the bathtub shower. Many alcove styles have the bathtub shower head mounted on the wall above the tub fixtures. They are ideal for those who don't have enough space for both a bath and shower enclosure and are excellent for small bathrooms.

One of the many materials used to make bathtubs is fiberglass. It is very inexpensive, lightweight, and readily molded into bathtub shapes. Higher end fiberglass bathtubs are insulated with an inner foam core. This allows them to retain more heat and avoid a hollow sound when the user moves around. Fiberglass bathtubs do have a tendency to scratch from use. However, most small scratches and abrasions can be removed with water based auto polishing compound.

Acrylic bathtubs are an alternative to fiberglass which does not have the tendency to scratch. They are chip and crack resistant, but more expensive than a fiberglass tub. They are also lightweight, and any damage can be fixed either with a liquid polisher or buffing with toothpaste. They easily retain a high gloss finish, and the color of the tub is not subject to fading. The acrylic material also retains heat, removing the need for an insulated tub. Strong chemical cleaners, such as acetate, can break down the structure of an acrylic tub. It is important to be careful what you use to keep your acrylic tub clean, so that it does not degrade.

Beyond The Basics...

You also have the choice, should you desire, to invest in a custom, or high-end shower and tub. Cast iron, marble, and other options present themselves for the truly individual bathroom. They are often very heavy, however, require maintenance, and cost a lot more than acrylic or fiberglass styles. These should only be considered if you have a desire for a unique bath and deep pockets.
